27th Evacuation Hospital, 1942-1945
An Online Exhibit
As part of the war program of the University of
Illinois, the Chicago Colleges of Dentistry, Pharmacy and Medicine, including
Rush Medical College organized an Evacuation Hospital in May of 1942. It served
as a mobile Field Hospital in the combat zone to provide emergency care for
the wounded. In many types of battle casualties early treatment is essential
to recovery. The hospital functioned in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany
following the 7th Army.
This exhibit uses materials and documents from
the 27th Evacuation Hospital Collection which is part of the
University Archives
at the University of Illinois at Chicago. This collection is comprised of donations
from various people who served with the 27th Evacuation Hospital during World war II. It contains
official military records, correspondence, diaries, logs, photographs, films
and assorted memorabilia documenting the experiences of soldiers in the 27th

Historical Timeline:
Oct 1942. Camp Breckenridge Kentucky. Intensive military training
program began.
Jan 6, 1944. Stuart Park, West Virginia. Tent hospital set up.
Jan 31, 1944.Fort Devens Massachusetts. Clothing and equipment inspected and
the
hospital equipment was packed for overseas shipment.
Mar 21, 1944.Unit left Fort Devens for Camp Patrick Henry, Virginia.
Apr 1, 1944. Boarded Liberty Ship, "SS John Sargent" for overseas
deployment.
Apr 19,1944. Unit debarked in Oran North Africa and transported to staging
area #2
known as "Goat Hill".
May 12, 1944. Unit Boarded "Seminole" and arrived at Naples Italy.
May 22, 1944. A 1500 bed general hospital was set up on the outskirts of Maddaloni,
Italy and designated to receive only French Colonial casualties.
Aug 28, 1944. Personnel embarked on ships for Marseille.
Aug 30, 1944. The unit arrives at St. Tropez and proceeds to Bouc-Bel-Aire,
Southern France
where a hospital was set up to serve as a station hospital and
dispensary for all American troops in this area.
Sep to Oct, 1944. A hospital site was established at Xertigny to support
the ground forces
close to the battle areas.
Nov 25 to Dec 21, 1944. Hospital set up in Baccarat, France in buildings which
were badly
damaged by shell fire.
Dec 21, 1944. Hospital set up at Haguenau.
Dec 27, 1944. Hospital moves back to Baccarat.
Mar 20, 1945. Hospital moved to Fenetrange and set up in a school building.
Mar 25, 1945. Unit set up a small tent hospital at Dreisen Germany.
Apr 5, 1945. Unit set up a hospital in Hosbach.
Apr 24, 1945. Hospital set up at Feuchtwangen.
May 9, 1945. Hospital set up at Starnberg.
Nov 28, 1945. Troops sailed for the U.S.
Dec 10, 1945. 27th Evacuation Hospital was inactivated.
